These papers relate to Webb's shipbuilding business and consist of drawings of ships, 1827-ca. 1900, including paddle wheel steamers, four-masted barks, clipper ships, iron monitors, schooners, steam frigates, packets, and steam yachts; the book of offsets, 1839-1869, detailing measurements of ships he built; certificate books, 1834-1869, giving ship measurements, capacity, and person or firm for which it was built; roll books, 1840-1864, listing work done on each ship; record book for blacksmith work done on specific ships, 1853-1869; receipt book, 1863-1868; logbooks of the DUNDERBERG, 1867, and original contract for its construction, 1862; and a scrapbook kept by Webb, 1838-1876, concerning the construction and voyages of his ships and American shipping in general. Collection also includes title abstract with maps of Webb's property in New York City, 1866.

William H. Webb was born in 1816. He began his career as an apprentice in the shipyard of his father, Isaac Webb (1794-1840). William Webb became noted as a designer and builder in New York City and later as founder of the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, New York. He took over the shipyard upon his father's death and built a variety of wooden-hulled vessels, including clipper ships, packets, steamships, military vessels, and others.
